Sector 104 Noida

Apathy Towards Depleting Water Tables

It is said that history repeats itself. Not long ago, women of the house in rural areas used to travel miles just to fill one matka with water; we, in urban India, used to see this from the comfort of our homes in movies, advertisements and wonder why.

Cut to the present! Many countries as well as so-called modern Indian cities like Bengaluru, Delhi, Ghaziabad, Noida etc. are facing an acute water shortage. It is believed that World War III would be because of drinking water.

The problem has already started between different Indian states asking for their share of water.

Noida groundwater level has gone down from 20-30 feet in 2002 to 140 feet currently with water depletion rate at 11-12 feet per year. Due to this, there is high TDS making it undrinkable. People resort to water from private companies; water tankers are a reality.

Many Noida sectors are dependent on local distribution system which is highly unreliable. The numerous skyscrapers and urban migration have led to major water disparities between different regions.

Such an irony that people in rural areas are moving to urban areas for work and people in urban areas are moving to rural areas for relaxation!

And then, in the light of all this, we still have Hamletians who waste water shamelessly by washing their luxury cars using hoses/ pipes. In the near future, city-dwellers will search for water in their same luxury cars; people in rural India will wonder why.
