He gives depth to colours!
Award-winning Artist Saurabh Mohan (member of the Global Art Foundation (California), has been selling his paintings in the USA, UK, Sweden and Australia for over a decade.
Profoundly deaf since birth, Saurabh lost his talking friends one by one because of his communication problems. But he found his true friends in colours. Colours, which he could silently smear or smudge, stroke or sprinkle, drip or dissolve — giving vent to his inner turmoil of passions and pleasures, loves and hates, fears and frustrations — according to his fancy. And this fancy could strike him at any time of the day or night. Putting on his artist’s “uniform” (usually a disreputable outfit splashed with colour) he’d slip to his garage studio at the back, taking along Hector, his golden retriever, and a snack of green chillies — known to sharpen the brain — with some salt on a plate.
From time to time, his former art teacher would drop in for a chat. Saurabh’s spontaneous creativity and variety of expression astounded him. For, Saurabh never sketched any outlines on the canvas when he started a painting. Nor would he discuss a composition beforehand. His strategically placed thick impasto strokes in various hues and tints emphasized shadows, and brought out subtle forms hidden at different levels.
Mostly a self-taught artist, Saurabh Mohan was invited to hold his first solo exhibition, “Art is Ability” by the American Centre, New Delhi. Featuring over 30 large abstract acrylic on canvas paintings, it was widely admired. “What a depth Saurabh has given to colours! The longer you see a work, the more it grows on you. And the perspective changes and the depth increases as you walk away to enjoy the symphony of colours from a distance,” remarked a visitor enthusiastically.
Since then, Saurabh has put up solo exhibitions and participated in group shows at premier venues in Indian cities. A few years ago, pre- Covid he was selected and invited by Agora — one of the top 10 galleries in New York — to display and sell his paintings there.
