The AOH garden is a place of great importance to all in the community, a space that belongs to all of us. Every morning or evening, one can see how all AOH residents enjoy our small patch of green.
It is heartening to see groups of elders gather to socialize, children play and many enjoy mindful moments and get the day’s exercise in the green space.
Yet, we as a community are guilty of some oversights in not cherishing & nurturing our gardens the way they deserve to be cherished.
While the garden belongs to all of us as a community, it does not belong to any one individual. Hence, taking things like plants, stones, soil, flowers and cuttings from the garden is wrong.
Imagine if each one of the thousand households thought they deserve a few flowers growing in our small garden, will there be any left? Matters have come to an embarrassing stage as there have been instances of young saplings being dug out and stolen from the community gardens!
We have to say no to this culture of Pilferage from our gardens.
For some time now, the horticulture team has been working hard to stop plucking of flowers and theft of pebbles from our community gardens. But the theft of young chrysanthemum saplings grown from seed in our community nursery this past month is a new low and a crushing blow.
This is a really sad turn of events. Through this column, we appeal to the whole community to work together to stop this misdemeanour.
