The All India Kitchen Garden Association’s Unit 7B unit, which has members from G.K. 2 and surrounding areas organized a lecture demonstration by the re-nowned bonsai artist, Mr. Saumik Das, on Wednesday 26th July. As expected, there was a good turnout of attendees.
Mr. Saumik Das explained that the term ‘Bonsai’ literally meant ‘tree in a pot’ in Japanese, where this art form originated. Bonsai is an art form where the artist is allowed freedom of expression while he creates his creation. The pot used to make a bonsai is shallow as bonsai’s are viewed at eye level. Mr. Das specialises in the Penjing style of bonsai. Within this style, there are three sub-styles. There is Tree Penjing, wherein the tree is predominant. The second is Rock Penjing, wherein the focus is on the natural rocks and the plants used are small. Lastly, there is Landscape Penjing, wherein a combination of trees and rocks is used to create a landscape imitating nature.
Mr. Saumik Das demonstrated by repotting a 15-year-old Ficus Rumphii plant how a landscape Penjing could be made. The first phase involved fixing the tree in a way so as to display its Nibbari. In the second phase, natural coral rocks which are rich in calcium were added. These rocks and all other natural rocks used in bonsai slowly release nutrients that feed the plant. He also added stone dust and moss. The moss helps to prevent soil erosion.
Bonsai’s require regular care and maintenance. This involves pruning them from time to time. Sunlight is vital for the growth of the bonsai’s. Since they have a front viewing side, the bonsai must be rotated for the back to face the sunlight for uniform growth. Watering is done by showering them once a day in all seasons except summer when they need to be watered twice.
Proud owners love to bring their prized bonsai trays indoors, however, they should not be kept indoors for more than 48 hours.
It was a privilege to see Mr. Das in action snipping away to create magic.
