Superfood – Microgreens

by Amita Bhuwania (9810085065)

The meeting on September 28 saw a power packed session where the speaker was none other than Mrs. Sangeeta Aggarwal, known for her expertise in growing microgreens. Since AIKGA is
still following the hybrid model, this meeting was online. Sangeeta was aptly prepared and covered the entire subject well. She started by explaining the basics of what is microgreens, why one should grow microgreens, what can be grown as microgreens, and finally how to grow them.
The beauty of growing microgreens is that it does not require many resources in terms of money, time or space. One can get started with whatever seeds are available in the kitchen – coriander, mustard, fennel, and methi, to name a few. She showed the various types of containers that can be used for the same – used takeaway boxes, mushroom, and fruit containers as also paper plates. Extolling on the innumerable virtues of growing microgreens, she demonstrated the various mediums that can be used for growing them- right from tissue paper, cloth, and cotton to the ideal soil mix.
The audience listened with rapt attention as she gave a live demo of the same. As the session drew to a close – Sangeeta showed the various lush green microgreens that she had been growing in the confines of her kitchen. It is important not only to know how to grow them but also the right way to harvest them for use. If one does not know how to use them, it is pointless making the effort. To the sheer delight of the audience, she demonstrated some easy recipes which had everyone salivating. Wrapping up the session with a Q&A and some fun chit-chat – the meeting could be summed up as a highly informative and enjoyable one.
Such sessions by AIKGA have a deep impact on people empowering them with knowledge of gardening and nutrition toward a healthy lifestyle. The convenors deserve special mention and appreciation for trying to motivate the members to keep their enthusiasm for gardening and also for getting experts as speakers for their meetings.
