We are currently addressing a growing concern that has been unsettling our community: the rise in extortion tactics employed by some members of the Kinner (hijra) community. Traditionally, many from this group seek donations during celebrations like weddings and births, but recently, we’ve seen a troubling shift toward aggressive harassment and coercion, leaving residents feeling increasingly uncomfortable and unsafe.
Reports from residents describe being approached forcefully during public events, with demands for money that come with threats of public humiliation or verbal abuse if not met. This behaviour is causing a great deal of distress and anxiety, impacting the peaceful atmosphere we have worked so hard to build in our township.
Recognizing the seriousness of the issue, Our Suncity RWA Chairperson, Kusum Sharma took immediate action by bringing this matter to the attention of Dr. Mayank Gupta, DCP East. Dr. Gupta fully understood the gravity of the situation and promised swift action. The SHO of Sector 53, Sukhbir, has been directed to address all complaints promptly, and a meeting will soon be held with the Kinner community to curb any further instances of harassment.
We are optimistic that, with the combined support of law enforcement and the active cooperation of our residents, we can resolve this issue swiftly and restore the sense of peace and security that defines our township. We urge everyone to continue reporting any such incidents so we can work together to maintain a respectful and harmonious environment for all.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. We will keep you updated on the progress as we work toward a swift resolution.
