The world population is exploding at a rapid rate and the waste generated by this population is also increasing exponentially. Solid waste management remains a chal-lenge even today and a
much bigger and tougher challenge is management and proper disposal of E waste.
Our households generate a considerable amount of E waste on a daily basis. Be it small items like old batteries, discarded charging cords, adapters etc or much bigger items like defunct televisions, laptops, mobile phones etc. While we sell the bigger stuff to the kabadiwalas the smaller things like batteries, small pieces of electronic circuits, LED lights etc make it to our dustbins and eventually make their way to the landfills. These E waste items contain many harmful metals and substances like lead, mercury and nickel that can play havoc with our environment. These harmful substances can cause soil and water poisoning and ultimately prove to be fatal for living beings. It is thus very important for proper disposal of our E waste.
To make residents aware about the dangers of E waste and sensitise them about proper disposal of the same a workshop titled “ Aadatein Badlo” was organised in the community centre of sector 41 on October 1,2022. Here the residents were explained about the harmful affects of E waste and the correct way to handle this waste. The residents were also encouraged to bring their E waste to the workshop where it was collected and sent for recycling. There was also a painting competition for children that aimed at educating the children via this fun activity. Even the adults got their share of fun by playing games and watching a nukkd natak on the concerned theme. After the programme the residents were treated to some refreshments and the RWA was awarded with a certificate for their contribution towards the cause.
