Nice Occasion to Pay Tributes to Our Very Own Jasjit Singh
May was an eventful month in India’s tennis history 50 years ago.
The Eastern Region Davis Cup finals were held in Calcutta from 10th to 14th May 1974 between India and Australia. India managed to win 3-2 to enter the Inter Zonal Zone finals and dethrone a giant in the world of tennis. The series was one of the longest on record with a total of 327 games played over 5 days.
The 2 singles players were Vijay Amritraj and Jasjit Singh whilst the doubles match was played by Vijay and Anand Amritraj.
Jasjit gave us a head start and won the first singles by defeating Bob Giltinan who was then ranked 32nd in the world.
The match lasted a gruelling 4-1/2 hours over two days which Jasjit won 11-9, 9-11, 12-10, 8-6 in Calcutta South Club. It must be noted that the temperature was in the 40s accompanied by high humidity. Viewers were tumbling because of the heat when these gentlemen were making history.
It is a nice occasion to pay tributes to our very own Jasjit Singh, Vice President of the Managing Committee and Chairperson of the Sports Subcommittee, who was part of this team.
His never say die energy is always visible in the colony as is his enthusiasm for sports and his desire to enrol youth and the elderly for activities that enable movement and fitness.
Our heartiest congratulations to Jasjit Singh for being part of this immortal occasion and leaving a legacy behind for generations to emulate.
