For Protsahan and all its students and their families, 2023 is an important landmark. We will be completing a decade (10 years) in the service of the community around us during which 2 students have completed their graduation, one is in the final year, 2/3 are going to enter the portals of University this year and many more are going to complete their school. What is a matter of greater satisfaction is that 90% of these students are girl child.
I remember, 9 years back, when on 1st Jan 2014 we started our open air classes for young out-of-school boys and girls, or school drop outs, there was a great reluctance among the parents to send them to our classes because of the general cynicism and also because these young boys and girls especially girls were supposed to join their mothers and assist them in their job as a domestic help and also in doing household chores, and marry them off once they reach 14/15.
The boys were also supposed to take up odd jobs once they reach 12/13 years of age. Looking at this cynicism, I never thought at that stage, nor did my students and their families would have imagined, that one day we would reach this far. I am sure, looking back, my students and their families must be proud of themselves. It’s a day of great fulfilment for all of us. A small seed sown 10 years back has grown into a big flowering tree. The cynicism has given way to hope and aspirations. The parents, instead of being in a hurry to marry off their daughters are actively encouraging them to study and make good career in life.
I wish all the readers of Samvada and their families a VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR. They have been a great support throughout our journey. Without that, we would not have been able to do anything. I am sure 2023 will bring new success, happiness and fulfilment in your lives. Many of my students are on the verge of breaking new grounds this year. I wish all of them a great year 2023.
