The Defence Colony (WA) Club and The Gracious Living Foundation hosted a book discussion on “Swallowing the Sun”, on Saturday, 24 Feb 2024; the book was the debut novel by Ms Lakshmi Puri, former Asst Secretary General, United Nations. Ms Bharati Mirchandani was in conversation with the author.
An article written by Shri Rajeev on the book discussion is reproduced below.
At the Club today
An absolutely riveting conversation between Bharti Mirchandani and Ambassador Lakshmi Puri on her very recently released book “Swallowing the Sun”.
The book in itself is a superb multi-dimensional story spanning three generations from feudal India to Independence, but beyond the story emerges the intellectual colossus of the author. Ambassador Puri displays her articulacy proficiency not just with the pen, but her extensive knowledge of Sanskrit, Marathi, English juxtaposed with a deep understanding of Hindu scriptures.
The book liberally draws extensively Marathi literature and uses poetry to convey occasions, emotions; inspired by her parents deep involvement in literature, theatre and poetry, the penmanship of Lashmi Puri flows with ease, transcending barriers, shattering stereotypes, climbing higher and higher till it attains colossal heights.
The erudite discussion with an intellectual giant, juxtaposed with an equally incisive host, opened the eyes of the audience to a world we have lost out to, to those who shaped a vibrant independent India. Ambassador Lashmi Puri couldn’t be a better exemplar of those imbued with a value system of the torch bearing generation that created a new independent India.
I express my deep gratitude to the “Gracious Living Foundation” for organising such intellectually stimulating conversations that stymie mental dwarfism. Our special thanks to Major Jasbir Singh A mail received from who has steadfastly raised the bar for such conversations.
