But the Residents Also Need to Follow a Few Civic Guidelines
The heading may sound inappropriate to many but it is the sad truth. We are a strange nation with a huge population bursting at the seams but talking about practical things and solving issues – is still found uncomfortable. One of the consequences of this discomfort and embarrassment associated with such things – is choked sewers!
The sewer line in H Block was choked. Due to this, some of the drains were so choked that they spewed sewer water on the road. It had been a revolting sight, not to mention the horrific stench and health hazard. With smog in the air and dirty water on the ground, one feels we are in a living hell. The resident living adjacent to the spot where there is overflowing sewer water says that they had been complaining about this problem to the Authority but nothing had been done about it. On bringing it to the notice of RWA, Keshav made efforts to get the sewers and drains cleaned using a suction machine.
Old leaves of the trees dry up and get accumulated in the drains along the roads and choke the drains. Apart from these dry leaves, polythene bags, plastic cups and Thermo Cole items also get accumulated in drains. But the filth that comes out of the drains and is majorly responsible for choking sewer lines mostly consists of used sanitary napkins, diapers and even condoms. People still have inhibitions and are hesitant to dispose of these things properly; especially if they live in a joint family. The easiest way is to flush it in the toilet.
It may cause temporary choking of the toilet which can be taken care of easily, but most of it flows in the drain and gets accumulated in sewer lines. Where this filth gets accumulated, the sewer line chokes – though the houses near this choked line may not be the ones responsible.
One resident points out that the reason for this spillage and choked sewers is that some people have built driveway ramps over the drain, obstructing the passage of sewage. To overcome this blockage and as per Noida Authority instructions, the residents have to remove ramps, hedges and small gardens so that drains can be cleaned. But the residents feel that removing these structures will cause inconvenience to them. So many times the cleaning of the drains- which should be a regular feature – is not complete.
The onus lies on the residents to follow a basic civic responsibility to keep the Sector clean. Also, there is a need to spread awareness that flushing sanitary napkins or condoms cause a lot of problem in sewer lines. So stop doing it!
