Senior citizen slips and falls, Another saved in the nick of time!
Who could have thought a casual family outing, a dinner with your loved ones would turn into an ordeal just minutes after having parted happily. A painful ordeal that would last a few weeks and rob the family of the joy of reunion. But that is exactly what happened to a senior citizen visiting family in GK2.
The senior citizen (name withheld on request) in question was visiting family in GK2 and went for dinner in one of the restaurants in the M block market. After a hearty meal and an equally hearty time with the family, she bade the family goodbye and was walking towards her car. The numerous haphazardly parked cars forced her to walk between them. The uneven surface of the road twisted her ankle and she lost her balance. She fell hard on her side and was badly shaken. She somehow managed to get into the car and called her family, who immediately rushed to her rescue. Unfortunately another senior citizen with them lost her balance at the same spot and would have fallen had she not been caught in time.
Upon reaching home, the extent of bruising was discovered. The entire right side she had fallen on was badly bruised and her ankle was swollen. She was advised complete bed rest for 3 weeks as she had suffered a torn ligament in addition to the severe bruising.
Through Samvada we have often tried to highlight the numerous issues plaguing the GK2 M block market. An upscale market that has become the pride of South Delhi and the favourite haunt of the youngsters and aged alike. However, the increasing footfalls have also led to space crunch via parking issues and the load on the public infrastructure like the roads and the sewage system.
The parking scenario is a multilayered chaos at any point of time during the day. In spite of having one entry and one exit in the market, it is rarely adhered to. Numerous entry points from the backlanes of the market as also the W block, ensure that there is little traffic regulation in the market. Cars are parked in multiple lines both vertically and horizontally and the remaining space is taken up by vendors, two wheelers as also cars and Autos dropping and picking up the commuters. In all this chaos pedestrians walk on the road at their own risk.
The verandahs in the market are also not pedestrian friendly. Besides not being of uniform level they are also encroached upon by the shops and eating establishments in numerous ways. Parked bicycles to consoles put up by restaurants to take bookings, all hinder smooth pedestrian movement.
It is high time that the Authorities in association with TWA reins in establishments that do not follow laid down rules and also ensure the parking is streamlined so that a similar accident or incident in the future can be avoided.
