The Clash of Celebrations & Silence

It is a late morning hour. I am sitting at my home workstation, trying to get some writing done. It is quite peaceful. My dog is lying at my feet. My palms are cupped around my coffee mug.

Dhinchik dhinchik dhinchik! Both my dog and I jump. The peace has been penetrated by this harsh noise. I listen intently. It is some Hindi movie song being belted out. By an orchestra!

I slap my palm to my forehead. There go my peace and quiet! I had known that November to February, being the wedding season, will bring a fair bit of noise but not at 11AM for sure!

I guess I was mistaken. Weddings are joyous occasions celebrated with large gatherings. They bring with them a rise in noise levels, a growing concern these days. The wedding season coincides with the examination preparation time for students; so I can not even imagine their plight.

And then, the ailing, the elderly, those with hyperacusis, etc., they suffer too. Increasingly lavish weddings contribute to longer and louder celebrations. For those living in the vicinity, this is certainly an annoyance.

Noise ordinances have been issued, and at times, it just takes one complaint for the law enforcement to step in. But why do we even let matters reach such a stage? Why can not we be more conscious of our noise impact?

And those who play such loud music, doesn’t that affect their own hearing (when we, sitting a few kilometres away, get so affected)?

ATS One Hamlet is usually quite a peaceful place to live in. But every once in a while, either the Sectors 105 and 108 side or the Ashram side disrupt the tranquillity. Celebrations in the Sector 105 temple, events in the Fortune School, festivities in the Ashram… we have quite a ‘happening’ neighbourhood!

There is a fine balance between allowing people to celebrate and respecting the rights of surrounding residents to a quiet environment.
