As part of Anand Lok’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility, we have taken an important step this Diwali season by reintroducing waste segregation at the source. The initiative aligns with government guidelines and aims to reduce our environmental footprint while contributing to efficient waste management.
How It Was Done: Communication with Residents: Ahead of Diwali, a circular was issued to all residents, explaining the significance of waste segregation and its role in creating a cleaner environment. The message emphasized the importance of separating wet and dry waste at home and was framed to coincide with the annual cleaning practices associated with the festive season.
Training and Equipping Garbage Collectors: The garbage collector was briefed and trained on handling segregated waste. To facilitate this, the garbage collection cart was modified to include two separate compartments—one for wet waste (e.g., food scraps, organic matter) and another for dry waste (e.g., paper, plastic, recyclables). This ensures that the segregation initiated at households is maintained throughout the waste disposal process.
Community Engagement and Awareness: Residents were educated on what constitutes wet and dry waste. The communication included clear examples, such as food waste for wet waste and paper or plastic for dry waste, ensuring participation from every household.
Supporting Sustainable Practices: The wet waste collected is planned for composting within Anand Lok, a practice that contributed to the colony being recognized as a “Zero Waste Colony” in 2022-23. This step reduces reliance on external waste disposal systems and encourages sustainable waste management practices within the community.
Outcome: The waste segregation initiative serves as a meaningful step toward maintaining Anand Lok’s reputation as an environmentally conscious community.
