Dogs are not allowed in many prestigious parks like Siri Fort Park. Even overseas, there are parks which restrict bringing dogs inside where there are walkers, runners or simply people doing exercises. There’s a reason behind such restrictions. Some walkers don’t find it convenient to walk alongside dogs on such a narrow track which is hardly 5 feet wide. Moreover, dogs spoil the parks by pooping and peeing and the owners do not care to pick up the poop. One resident visits C- Block park with her huge size dog, who she claims has bitten everyone in her guesthouse except her. While walking she screams at the dog at the top of her voice, which disturbs the ladies who are practicing yoga there. If PERA has displayed the above board at the entrance of the park, which block representative Anjana Mathur claimed to have displayed, why doesn’t it take action against the violators. While requesting on whatsapp group, not to bring the dogs to the park, dog lovers start using foul language and PERA is a mute spectator. It should be the endeavor of PERA to get the instructions implemented for a peaceful use of the park. It can designate the park situated on the left side of the foot over bridge for dogs specifically. If dogs and other animals and humans have to cohabit peacefully then some rules and regulations have to be followed. Dog owners should be responsible for poop picking and keeping the dog on leash. If the Parks have boards saying “Dogs not allowed” then the rule should be adhered to. The local association should ensure that the rules are implemented. The problem is solved if we have designated parks for dogs. The dog owners should also train the dog walkers to follow the rules. This fight between dog owners and non dog owners is becoming very intense and both the parties have to reach a reasonable and logical conclusion. Both have to be empathetic and practical at the same time. Let us not add to our woes other than pollution and politics.
