Following the success of converting dry leaves into compost in DLF Phase 2’s Q Block last month, the Aawaz Volunteers Group has taken another step forward with plans to expand the project across the community. With the strong support of local residents, 25 compost bins have already been installed in various blocks, and the goal is to reach 50 bins by February 2025.
Now, to further minimize garbage management issues, Aawaz is introducing a new project aimed at turning kitchen waste into compost. This initiative will reduce daily kitchen waste while generating compost for residents’ gardens. The project can be implemented in both individual homes and shared community spaces, such as parks and vacant plots, provided residents lend their support. A trial phase will soon begin to test this kitchen waste composting initiative.
The composting process is simple and effective:
Daily Collection: Collect and chop kitchen scraps like vegetable and fruit peels into small pieces, which can be done by household helpers after a short training.
Using a Composter Bin: Place the waste into a bin with ventilation holes to allow for aeration.
Affordable and Accessible: Compost bins are available at a very nominal price, and accelerators like coco peat can be added to enhance compost quality.
Compost Formation: Over 90 to 120 days, the kitchen waste will transform into rich compost for use in potted plants and home gardens.
The project is further supported by the expertise of Mrs. Ila Sharma, a resident of P Block and an active member of the Kitchen Garden Association. With her extensive knowledge, Mrs. Sharma will help guide the community through the composting process, ensuring a smooth implementation.
The Aawaz Volunteers Group invites all residents of DLF Phase 2 to join hands in making this project a success. By participating, residents can actively contribute to reducing waste and creating valuable compost from kitchen scraps.
For those interested in participating or supporting the project, please reach out to Mr. Aurobindo Verma at 9971046777 or email aawazvolunteersgroup@gmail.com.
Together, let’s turn waste into a valuable resource, contributing to a cleaner and greener DLF Phase 2!
