GJCSCF Has Special Talks On Vaccination & Physiotherapy

GJCSCF has special talks on vaccination and physiotherapy for the seniors. The physiotherapy advice was given by Dr. Dharmender Singh who has a vast experience of more than two decades  during his interactive demonstration lecture on 29th September, 2024. He is practicing physiotherapist in Neeti Bagh. Many senior members of the Forum are visiting him.

His advice is that elderly should be extremely careful and avoid falls, particularly on wet or slippery surfaces in the bathroom. All pains from an injury do not need a hot compress or heat pad, he said. Though sometimes a single treatment will include both, as a general rule of thumb, one should use ice for acute injuries or pain, along with inflammation and swelling. In case of muscle pain or stiffness the affected area should be provided heat.

He demonstrated physically that in the event of a fall one should crawl on all fours to the nearest place where some support is available to enable getting up on your feet instead of trying to get up without support.

The Forum invited Dr Lalit Kant, a resident of Gulmohar Park, before our third Annual Vaccination Camp scheduled on 5th October. Dr Kant, an MD headed the Division of Epidemiology and amp; Communicable diseases at the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), was on WHO Expert Committee on Influenza Surveillance.

Dr Kant explained that Influenza virus and pneumococcal bacteria are amongst the common causes of upper respiratory tract infection during the cooler months of the year. Mostly the risk is for 65 and above and the risk continues increasing with age. In addition, the influenza infection enhances the risk of heart attack, and stroke.

He explained that the pneumonia vaccine (Prevenar13) is to be taken only once by the elderly and the Influenza vaccine is to be taken every year as the circulating influenza strains change, and the immunity given by the earlier the vaccine fades away.

The President had a special word for Col. Dr C S Pant. The day also marked the observance of World Heart Day which is celebrated every year to raise awareness about cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and promote heart-healthy lifestyles worldwide. CVDs are one of the leading reasons for mortality worldwide.

This month-end we also celebrate, probably, the highest number of birthdays of our esteemed members. They were all wished a joyous birthday full of cheer and good health by the President to a resounding applause by all present.
