On Friday, 11 October, the Lotus Society hosted its annual Shankdwani competition as part of the Durga Puja celebrations. This unique event saw members enthusiastically participating in the traditional blowing of the conch, or shankha, a practice deeply rooted in religious rituals.
Since childhood, I have been fascinated by the art of blowing the conch, learning from my grandfather, who performed this ritual daily. Blowing the conch is believed to purify the air, increase positivity, and, as I have personally experienced, it offers great health benefits, particularly for improving lung capacity.
The competition was a lively affair, with participants dressed in colourful attire, celebrating the spirit of Durga Puja. The sound of the conch resonated through the air, amplifying the energy and devotion of the festival.
While the competition brings immense joy to participants and onlookers, it remains exclusive to the community members. This ensures the tradition is cherished and nurtured each year with full enthusiasm and passed on to the generations to come.
