The sweltering summer of 2024 pushed everyone to reflect deeply on causes and effects of climate change. We, at Books For All, thought it necessary to spread awareness among our students about simple practices they could adopt to reduce their carbon footprint, even at a young age. The month of July saw BFA libraries focus their efforts on spreading environmental awareness. Through a series of thoughtful activities, the librarians aimed to inculcate sustainable practices and enlighten young minds on humanity’s relationship with the planet. Kicking off the theme of ‘protect our environment’, lessons on the importance of reduce, reuse and recycle were imparted. Students were encouraged to minimize wastage and give second life to discarded items through upcycling. Making cloth bags from old fabrics taught practical alternatives to single-use plastic. This hands-on learning experience instilled the value of reducing our carbon footprint through mindful consumption.
Other engaging sessions included demonstrations on rainwater harvesting and water conservation. They learnt how diverting rain into storage tanks can supplement groundwater levels and ensure water security for communities. Science experiments filled the curious souls with wonder. Seeing how oxygen is essential for combustion drove home safe use of fuels. Experiments showing air has weight using balloons and a simple hand-made balance left kids amazed at invisible elements sustaining life.
They enthusiastically participated in poem recitations and short skits focused on conservation themes, helping hone their verbal skills through creative self-expression. Through such well-curated activities tailored to their level of comprehension, the librarians aimed to cultivate guardianship for the environment from a young age.
