We gave a clarion call to all the Residents of Noida, to Corporates, Educational Institutions, NGOs, and Service organis-ations like Lions Club / Rotary Club etc. to participate in the Tree Plantation Drive, and in the post plantation care under our initiative ‘Each One, Plant One and Nurture one’.
Till date, the volunteers of Green Your Neighbourhood have planted over 10,000 saplings this monsoon. The plantations have been undertaken by residents in 36 sectors, in over 90 sites across Noida. We had two major rounds of plantation, on 14 and 21 July, and many more are lined up.
For almost two months, our volunteers worked at a frenzied pace to identifying suitable sites for plantation and choice of trees for each location. Only native trees were chosen. Trees like Neem, Peepal, Pilkan, Jamun, Imli, Papri and Bargadh were for the green belts; flowering trees Amaltas, Jacaranda, Pride of India, Kachnar, Molshree, Drum sticks, Palash, Indian Coral tree/ Tota for parks and areas with basements. Closer to the day of the plantation, pits were dug and saplings were collected. Extensive support and assistance was provided by the Horticulture Department of Noida Authority, Director Horticulture, Anand Mohan, and his team.
Residents planted trees in their neighbourhood and in the green belts next to their society. Members of the Rotary Club, and Inner Wheel also planted trees. A TV channel had a plantation drive for their employees and families. We also planted trees in collaboration with volunteers from Warriors Without Cause (WWC) and Help and Feed India (HFI).
Many schools participated in the Tree plantation drive. Protsahan, Dribble Academy, NGO Usha Kiran, DAV School, Gyanshree School, Mayoor School and Lotus Valley, Step by Step, Prometheus School, The Shriram Millennium School, Little Engines and Footprints, Preschool and Day care children planted trees near their schools. This was an overwhelming moment to see little ones participating. The trees are the legacy, we want to leave behind for our future generations. It is very apt that we involve the children.
Trees were planted in the name of their children or parents/ grandparents or trees were planted in the memory of their loved ones. The idea was to create an emotional connect between the people who planted and the sapling. This was to ensure that those who planted saplings are involved in the post plantation care. The project Noida Mega Tree Plantation Drive, 2024 continues….
