Should South City-1 Attempt to be a Zero Waste Colony ?

If South City1 must become a Zero Waste Colony, SCRWA will need to enrol as a Bulk Waste Generator (BWG).

As a colony, we will have to do the following:

1. On-site waste segregation into three categories namely biodegradable, non-biodegradable and domestic hazardous waste.

2. Process wet waste (Bio-degradable waste) within the premises itself and develop a system of reuse of products of processing, that is, compost or biogas etc.

3. Handover segregated dry waste to the ULB waste collector or agency authorized by the ULB to collect waste on its behalf as per the direction or notification by the local authorities,  from time to time.

4. Store horticulture waste and garden waste generated from the premises separately in its own premises and carry out composting in compost pits within the premises. In case of non-availability of land, dispose of as per the directions of the urban local body from time to time.

5. Store construction & demolition waste generated in own premises separately, and dispose off as per the Construction & Demolition Waste Management Rules, 2016

6. In addition to the above, bulk waste generators are required not to mix E-waste . Rather, it should be  stored separately as and when generated and should be handed over to a certified recycling chain.

This is an onerous task and will need complete cooperation from all residents. The last date for application for BWG in Gurgaon is 15th August 2024. We seek suggestions from residents about this.
