Plantation Drive: A Welcome Move Towards a Greener Tomorrow

In recent times, the term “Plantation Drive” has become increasingly familiar. It’s heartening to see this initiative gaining popularity across forests, parks, schools, colleges, and public spaces. As we grapple with the challenges of pollution, stress, and an unhealthy environment, we’re turning to nature for solace. However, our actions have distanced us from nature, and it’s time to return to our roots. Mother Earth provides us with the essentials for life – air, water, food and much more – all free of cost. What are we doing in return? Being an integral part of this universe, we can’t simply sit back and ignore our responsibilities towards this home of ours. It’s time to take action against global warming, carbon footprints, and depleting green cover.

Since last month I have been associated with the plantation drive in and around South Delhi areas. To name a few where I have been actively involved- parks in GK2, Kali Mandir CR Park, Nehru Place, Safdarjung Enclave, Chirag Dilli and Defence Colony. We have also encouraged and involved children in public and government schools. We have been requested for a second round by the people of Kailash Hills.   This activity engages the people living in the area to plant and then ensure nurturing of the plants thereafter. Planting a tree is easy but its aftercare and nurturing are crucial, and with collective efforts, we can make a significant difference.

Growing trees should be a passion for us and we can help achieve this through our Sewa. Let us plant new saplings along with saving our old ones.  Plant and adopt at least one tree. We benefit from trees planted by our older generation, let our generation plant the tree saplings and our future generations. Let us give back the birds their homes that our mindless construction has snatched from them.

Moreover, let us ensure sufficient space is left around tree roots during pavement construction, and avoid choking the roots with cement or tiles. Regular tree audits, pruning, and identifying dangerous trees will help maintain their stability. By planting saplings of environment-friendly trees, we can preserve biodiversity, enjoy fruits and shade, and protect ourselves from scorching heat. We can distribute good quality seeds and saplings of environment-friendly trees, offer technical support, and volunteer our skills in plantation drives. Workshops on seed ball preparation, bio enzyme production, plogging activities (removing plastics from public spaces), and water conservation awareness can make a significant impact.
