Tremors jolted the neighbourhood in a lane in S Block on the evening of 2nd May‘24. While some residents felt the ground beneath their feet vibrate severely, the others were shocked to see cracks developing in the walls of their homes as well as on the road outside. The terrified residents rushed outdoors to check the cause of this turmoil and saw a heavy earth moving bulldozer at work in an under construction site in their lane. The use of such a machine in a residential area is prohibited and the Builder was found to be using it illegally. The residents wasted no time in complaining to the RWA about the matter. An RWA team promptly visited the site and lodged a police complaint against the defaulting builder as well as the owner of the property.
While seeking police intervention in such cases is the right course of action, prevention is always better than cure. One wonders how such machines are able to find their way into a residential area unchecked. GK-2 is a highly porous colony and is often used by passersby as a thoroughfare to access nearby areas. Even then, there ought to be some security measures in place that can prevent such machines from coming inside the colony to obviate damage to public as well as private property.
We, at Samvada, have often complained about the Builders menace in GK-2 which is in the throes of a rampant construction activity almost everywhere. Introduction of the Builders Code of Conduct as a tool to rein in the Builder community in the colony is a long pending demand by the residents that needs to be pursued and operationalized by RWA at the earliest. Not just this, Builders should be made to compensate for the loss to the public and private property caused due to their actions. Collection of necessary Deposit from the Builders for this purpose must also be considered within the framework of law. Unless these measures are firmly deployed, such instances cannot be brought under control.
