A sneak peek into the world of Orchids by our Orchid Queen – Abha Batra. Recently Green Magickers got together to share the joy of spring through the myriad blooming flowers from Roses to Bougainvilleas, Adeniums, Kalanchoes etc. and the special prized ones – The Orchids. Eager to learn the unusual craft of growing orchids in inclement Delhi weather, they were treated to a heavenly delight.
Abha Batra took everyone on a journey through the enchanting world sharing her expertise in cultivating these delicate blooms amidst the dynamic climate of Delhi. Though she claims to be no expert but just a notch ahead of being a Novice – her smiling, beaming and profusely flowering orchids narrate a different tale. Deeply passionate about them – she says they are God’s most unique creations. A few years ago a chance visit to a friend’s terrace garden where she found orchids growing on the bark of a tree aroused her interest. There was no looking back as she dived deep into enhancing her knowledge. The best care according to her is “nothing at all” but a spray of water every day. They are the easiest to grow and hardest to kill. An engrossing session which held everyone’s attention captive – she covered all aspects well.
Abha has demystified the art of Orchid cultivation penning down her experiences in a book which is a Gardener’s delight. In the book, she claims to be “infected” with “Orchid Fever” – the hunger to grow more of these exotic plants. It was a delight to get signed copies of the book which is the first of its kind. In the book she endeavours to empower others through their orchid-growing journey breaking the notion that they can be grown only in beachy places like Thailand, Singapore or Hawaii. From the bustling cityscape to the tranquil haven of her terrace garden, one can discover the secrets to nurturing thriving plants here.
She wrapped up the session with a quote by Swami Vivekananda – “there are no mistakes in life, only lessons to be learnt”. Everyone left highly motivated embarking on a new journey and learning a precious lesson.
