As Def col is now one of the greenest colonies in South Delhi, the “spring of 2024” is adding to its beauty with the residents creating their own private gardens in the balcony, terrace etc. to enjoy with their families. The Samvada team is now going to showcase 1-2 gardens every month to highlight the efforts of Def Col residents to create more and more oxygen for the colony. This month we visited the beautiful terrace garden of Vibha Gupta (A-443 Top floor Def col) who has been nurturing her plants for more than 2 decades. When Gupta’s shifted to Def col three decades back the terraces were not used to keep plants. They took initiative by keeping few pots to make a small kitchen garden for dhania and pudina. With each passing year the whole family was involved in getting more plants including fruits, flowers and medicinal to create a masterpiece for their family and neighbors. I still remember visiting their house for a cup of tea in the beautiful terrace garden. Mrs. Vibha started learning the art of gardening as a hobby and used the art of grafting etc. to create new plants from the existing ones! The kitchen garden was created to get more than 100 Kg of vegetables for the family ….all organic veggies !! The motivation from veggies prompted her to start a private fruit orchard on the terrace. She visited pusa institute and purchased dwarf quality of fruits plants to grow mango, pomegranate, Guava, strawberry, mushroom, watermelon etc. It’s a feeling of proud to get more than 200 Kg of fruits every year. The terrace parties are awesome at her place with exotic plants kept all over to spread aroma of flowers, fruits and vegetables.
Mrs. Vibha has been a winner of many garden festivals of South Delhi by presenting her bonsai plants for the competition. She also received first prize for being the best garden of the colony for many years. We at Samvada wish her all the best in her Endeavour which is motivating many others to create these private gardens on terrace and balconies. We will be highlighting these gardens every month in our forthcoming issues. Please contact Ajay Kumar @ 9999055994 for a personal visit to their gardens.
