Satish Gupta: A Badminton Champion’s Journey from Art to Athletics

Satish’s journey from Old Delhi to badminton champion exemplifies the power of passion and perseverance. Raised in a bustling joint family, his childhood was steeped in familial bonds, where his love for badminton first took root. Despite a casual interest, he pursued an art career, navigating the world of miniatures and artefacts. However, life’s twists led him back to his childhood passion, where he found solace and purpose on the badminton court.

This article explores Satish’s multifaceted journey, shedding light on his evolution from an art connoisseur to a stalwart athlete in badminton.

Q: Can you walk us through your journey from being an art connoisseur to a badminton champion?

A: Certainly. My journey has been quite dynamic. I was deeply involved in the world of art, particularly in procuring miniatures and artefacts from across India. However, after my uncle’s passing and the closure of our family business, I found myself drawn back to my childhood passion for badminton. I gradually transitioned from the art scene to the badminton court, rediscovering the joy of playing and competing.

Q: What motivated you to pursue badminton more seriously later in life?

A: It was a combination of factors. Moving to DLF Phase 2 in 1999 gave me more opportunities to engage in physical activities like badminton. Playing on empty grounds with local residents reignited my love for the sport, and as I grew older, I realised the importance of staying fit and active. Badminton offered me not only physical exercise but also mental stimulation and a sense of camaraderie with fellow players.

Q: How do you maintain your fitness and agility at the age of 75?

A: I believe in leading a balanced lifestyle. I eat light and healthy meals, prioritise regular exercise, and, most importantly, maintain a positive outlook on life. I don’t let age define my capabilities. Staying active and engaged keeps me young at heart.

Q: What advice do you have for aspiring badminton players, especially those in Gurgaon?

A: My advice is simple yet crucial: practice diligently and play to win. Gurgaon boasts numerous badminton academies, providing ample opportunities for enthusiasts to hone their skills. Learning from experienced players and competing against different opponents helps improve one’s game significantly. Dedication and perseverance are crucial to success in any sport.

Q: You’ve represented Haryana and even India in international championships. What were some of the highlights of your competitive journey?

A: Representing my state and country internationally was a dream come true. Defeating opponents from England and Malaysia was undoubtedly a proud moment for me. While I may not have clinched the ultimate victory, the experience was invaluable. Winning numerous trophies and titles at the state level has been equally rewarding, solidifying my passion for the sport. I played in all three categories — 70+ Men’s Singles, 75+ Men’s Singles and 79+ Men’s Doubles at the state level.

Q. Who are your favourite badminton players, and what qualities do you admire in them?

A: My favourite players are Lin Dan from China and Lee Chong Wei from Malaysia. They both are magicians of the sport, showcasing unparalleled skill and finesse on the court. Their dedication to fitness is remarkable, setting a high standard for aspiring players like me. Watching them play is always a source of inspiration, reminding me of the beauty and artistry of badminton.

Q: What are your thoughts on the future of badminton in India?

A: I’m optimistic about the future of badminton in India. We have seen tremendous growth in the sport thanks to the achievements of players like SainaNehwal, PV Sindhu, and many others. The key lies in nurturing young talent and providing them with the resources and support they need to succeed. With a growing number of academies and increasing interest in the sport, I believe India has the potential to become a powerhouse in badminton on the global stage.

Q: What are your aspirations, especially with the upcoming National Championship matches?

A: My primary focus is preparing for next month’s National Championship matches. I’m determined to give my best performance and hopefully add more accolades to my collection. Beyond that, I hope to continue inspiring others to pursue their passions and live life fully, regardless of age or circumstances.

Q: Any advice for aspiring players?

A: Dedication and perseverance are key. Practice diligently and play to win, utilising the resources available in Gurgaon’s numerous badminton academies.
