Jay Verma, a Grade XI student at Modern School Vasant Vihar, launched the campaign “Game Changers: Sustainability in Motion”, an inventive sustainability initia-tive. Focused on upcycling sports equipment waste, Jay’s USP is the UpBeat Speaker, that ingeniously repurposes discarded balls into Bluetooth speakers housed within the balls themselves. These UpBeat speakers, appealing to environmentally conscious consumers, convert sports waste into utility friendly, portable audio devices.
Collaborating with local sports academies and electronic factories, Jay sources old balls and electronic components to build UpBeat. He is raising awareness about increasing the lifespan of sports consumables, partnering with factory outlets to procure their surplus materials, educating the community about responsible e-waste disposal, thus bringing together diverse stakeholders to address the sports industry’s waste. He is hopeful his call to action will reach sportsmen far and wide and drive sports towards sustainability.
In addition to the UpBeat Speakers, Jay is conducting a sports gear collection drive in Vasant Vihar, collecting used equipment for repair and refurbishment. The refurbished items will be donated to the NGO Sudeva, supporting underprivileged athletes in training and practice games.
Through Game Changers, Jay is catalyzing grassroots action, fostering sustainability in sports by rallying communities, forming partnerships, and driving systemic change. This multidimensional approach not only transforms mindsets but also directly reduces waste volumes, showcasing Jay’s commitment to making a positive impact. To donate to Jay’s intivative, please send your old used sports equipment to Verma’s E 14/2, Vasant Vihar or contact at 9811315677. Help us give your old gear a new innings by refurbishing and upcycling.
