The doodhwala rang the doorbell at 6:30 am. I opened the door, expecting Brownie’s meows and her hurried steps to barge into the house, as soon as the door opened. But no, she was not there today. The spot where she usually perched herself was empty too. A little worried, I stepped out into the driveway, only to find little Brownie on the edge of the terrace parapet, her incessant ‘meows’ piercing my ears. Was she about to commit suicide? No Brownie…please don’t! I flung the milk packets on the kitchen slab and rushed to the terrace. To my horror, I found Gundi (a bully cat, so named by my kids because of her fierce looks) trying to slither away. She had cornered little Choti and had literally forced her to the edge of the parapet. She couldn’t jump below from the third floor and was crying for help. Gundi had to be taught a lesson. These attacks were increasing and Brownie was too small to defend herself. However, I was able to safeguard Choti with a jhadu, for now!
She came scurrying behind me as soon as Gundi escaped, and straight into the house, found her plate, gobbled a few chicken nuggets and plonked her self on sofa. Within minutes, the poor kitty was fast asleep on her back, all four limbs in the air, face tilted to one side, with some teeth showing through the open mouth. She seemed dead with a smile!!
With guests arriving, soon she was back in the wild outdoors with jealous bully cats all around. Around 3pm, as I sat sipping my tea, she was again attacked by Gundi and my quick intervention saved her from a brutal attack. Betadine and an 8 hour sleep bounced her back to her sprightly self but now we needed a good home for her.
