Universal Health Coverage Day

An NGO  & A Block, Sector 31 Noida, collaborated to conduct an interesting workshop for female domestic help on domestic sanitary waste management and related health and nutritional aspects.

It has been a short journey. Just a few years ago, Akshay Kumar starred in a thematically eye-opening film; advocating the use of sanitary towels, instead of cloth. Today, the interests of the global environment take centre stage and force the counter-argument that the non-biodegradability of the sanitary product makes it an unviable option, and propagates a return to recyclable cloth napkins. Balancing both -environment and health, with informed decision-making was the thrust of the workshop. The expert from the NGO gave a thought-provoking lecture, combining information and advice, in a simple understandable manner.

The girls, relaxing in the balmy sun, after their morning round of slogging, were remarkably knowledgeable and receptive. An interesting aspect of the afternoon was the surprisingly effective networking of the modern day maid. As the minutes passed, the crowd swelled to a 100-strong assembly. What always impresses me is the comfort of all age groups with the topic. There was a time, just a few decades ago, when the subject was painfully embarrassing and very often scary. The pragmatic attitude of the assembly was commendable. There won’t even be any giggling and ducking of heads. It’s becoming just another aspect of life. That felt wonderful!

The talk was followed by a presentation of gift hampers. It included a year’s supply of recyclable sanitary towels along with specially adapted lingerie to accommodate the new product to the attendees, some snacks and drinks in an organic jute bag. A few, socially conscious land ladies had accompanied their maids. They were requested to do the honours.
