Nothing Is Clean In The State Of Sushant Lok!

The residents of Sushant Lok C block are suffering a major garbage problem, residents are tired of complaining but to no avail! The streets are littered with garbage, the parks have more filth than grass and the vacant plots tell another story…The list is endless and so is the garbage in Sushant Lok! The garbage collection is erratic, Aarvi Garbage Collection Company gives a myriad of excuses but the condition prevails. People say the days they are prompt in visiting the premises are the end of the month when payments are due, the situation is worsening every day.

Residents are anguished with the EC who had promised to make C block a zero waste colony, they set up a composting plan, and appointed Saahas (NGO) to make the residents aware of waste segregation and even the German delegation was involved but sadly all resulted in segregated waste getting mixed up in vans, stalling of the composting unit for inoperative shredding machine, curing trays being dismantled from the plant, turning th entire area into a dump yard!

All lanes suffer, whether it is the entry of BSNL lane, House no. 1659, or outside the boundary wall of Ghulab Park- location- 358/A, the residents get the lanes cleaned privately and then the garbage appears magically! The Govt. School premises suffer the worst as callous people in the neighbourhood throw their garbage openly there, the whole place stinks badly where most of the students play in the daytime. What choice do they have?  They are surrounded by educated, selfish people who care for no one but themselves. Some crossed the limit when they threw the broken, unwanted WCs in the backyard of the DHBVN office in C block, making people believe perhaps a public toilet is emerging in the area.

The gardeners whether private or for parks, use vacant plots to dump their green waste, meanwhile, the private staff of the residents won’t stay behind either and the passersby use them as urinals, creating a safe haven for rodents and other pests who create a nuisance for the nearby neighbourhood. The Community Centre backyard has a long tale to exhibit, where private and govt. agencies are dumping their waste, and people around are living in stinking hell!

Whatever the cause, people are suffering, lanes suffer from a lack of brooming as only a few lanes are cleaned and the rest are left to be taken care of by themselves. Every day thousands of complaints with pictures and proof reach the SLRWA, who in turn do the needful to make the govt. agency work; which does not suffice. So on 5 September, Subir Ghosh took the initiative to clear the grounds of the Community Centre with JCBs and all the concerned machinery, the next day even EC commenced its cleaning of the govt. school premises and succeeded to some extent, many more joined in and made the work lighter but how much is enough- visitors will still throw the garbage when nobody is seeing, passersby will still spit and make the environment unclean, neighbourhood staff will still empty their trash cans in the vacant plots, regardless of the guidelines set by EC. It is us who need to dust our civic sense and behave like responsible citizens otherwise it is going to be the same sad story told incessantly. As the saying goes,’ been there- done that. Then I’ve been there several more times because apparently I never learn!”
