Season For Planting: Calling All Vegetable Garden Lovers!

The winter season is coming up and so is the time to sow your seeds for the lovely fresh and organic winter vegetables. Get a place in your back garden, some pots on the roof, or grab a piece of your neighbour’s empty plot!

Some valuable hints before you start!

1. The time now is to plant fenugreek, spinach, mustard, mint, pok choy, all salads, carrots, tomatoes, radish, cauliflower, cabbage etc

2. You can get the seeds and saplings from shops in Kapashera – Shivam or Balaji Beej Bhandar.

3. For seeds, mostly you can prepare the ground well and just sprinkle the seeds for the leafy vegetables. For cauliflower, cabbage etc. you can make the saplings in a separate box using 3 parts coco peat, 1 part vermiculite and 1 part perlite. Or 1 part coco peat and 1 part vermicompost.

4. For leafy vegetables like methi, dhania, palak, chulai and bathua prepare the soil as under: 1. Soil 10 kg, compost 2.5 kg, sand 2.5 kg, neem khali 1kg, Patti khad 1 kg, haldi 1gm per kg, choona 1gm per kilo, Kali mirch 1/2 gm per kilo, trichoderma 1gm per kg, beauveria bessianna 1 gm per kg, pseudomonas 1gm per kg plus 1 kg coco peat.

5. For brinjal, tomato, mirchi, gobi, broccoli, carrot, mooli, capsicum etc. the mixture is the same as above minus the coco peat.

For mooli just raise the sides of your vegetable beds and plant a seed at regular intervals on the raised part.

For keeping pests away, take a large plastic bottle, 100 gms of jaggery, and all your leftover nimboo peels, and keep adding to the water keeping it at 80% full. Open at regular intervals to let the gas out. Use this organic spray which should be ready after 3 months!
