A Joggers Paradise or Dengue, Malaria Breeding Place?

Vasant Vatika Park

I am not a regular jogger at the Vasant Vatika Park, I confess; still there are hundreds of residents of Vasant Kunj who religiously visit the park for a stroll or a jog, every day. Some young and elderly are also seen practicing Yoga in the grounds. You walk further inside and you are sure to spot some sports enthusiasts who play cricket on weekends, and then there are a bunch of people who look like serious sports people to me… who are either playing for some team or preparing for some competition. So much happens in this park when you stroll in the morning. Some people are even spotted catching up on the walk during the afternoon and evening time.

I am, most of the time, pushed by my dear husband to shed my lethargy and take at least two rounds of the park every day. I do oblige him sometimes by visiting the park and taking a few rounds. On one such visit to the park, I felt curious to peep inside the enclosed water body area of the park which is centrally located and cannot be missed by any chance. I have often wondered why it is locked and not beautified and opened for the residents to sit and enjoy watching the lovely birds that visit this water body.

So, coming back to this recent trip, I peeped through the iron grills hoping to spot some rare bird. Instead, I was aghast by what I saw inside. The whole water body was covered with green moss and not a single patch of water body could be viewed. To my horror, I saw no one from the park maintenance team (the maalis, the guards etc) caring about the mosquito breeding place that had been created right in the middle of the park.

I am just hoping that the concerned departments are doing their bit and pouring some medicine to keep the mosquitoes at bay. It is after all the health of so many people who flock into the park to keep up their good health.

I write this article to make the visitors of our beautiful Vatika Park aware of the health hazard that might be caused if the required steps are not being taken. So, dear readers, if you can question the maintenance team, please do and if you can get the water body cleaned and maintained, please do that so that the lovely park can also boast of a beautiful water body which no longer remains the eye sore of our own Vasant Vatika.
