The technological revolution has completely transformed the face of humanity, with technological gadgets becoming part and parcel of our existence, it is practically impossible to do away with the need for these gadgets. Gadgets starting from phones, laptops, and kitchen/home appliances to electronic toys, once rendered useless contribute to the enormous pool of e-waste that is accumulating on planet Earth.
This e-waste is highly hazardous and toxic, containing high levels of contaminants such as lead, mercury, beryllium, thallium, cadmium, and arsenic. This toxic and non-biodegradable waste threatens the entire ecosystem and can pose severe health challenges for humanity. We all are a part of the problem as we all use technological gadgets to some extent and we have to discard these gadgets at some point in time.
We all can be a part of the solution by knowing what to do with the gadgets that are no longer in use. Just tossing them into the junk can create a serious threat to the lives of junk dealers and dismantlers who, to make a profit from e-waste, can be exposed to toxic material.
Suncity remaining true to its core of making every effort to become a sustainable society has taken the bull by the horns as far as the e-waste is concerned. There are various steps taken to ensure that we as a community dispose of waste mindfully keeping the best interests of us humans and the environment in mind.
One of the very first endeavours in tackling e-waste is tying up with an NGO called Saahas which is doing remarkable work in the field of e-waste management. There is a big box installed in the community centre near the staircase that can be used as a bin for our e-waste.
So, whenever you are struggling with the idea of what to do with your e-waste, just drop it in the e-waste bin in the community centre. With the very busy lives that we lead, if that is not possible, the SRWA has been thoughtful in deciding upon an e-waste pickup day which is the third Saturday of every month. You just have to let the SRWA team know and the e-waste will be picked up.
