In February 2023, while making his usual rounds along Golf Course Road, Gurgaon resident Vikas Bagga, an avid runner, found himself drawn to the Banjara hut settlement. Seizing the opportunity, he spontaneously approached the Banjara parents and children, inquiring if they would be interested in receiving education right in their own dwellings. To his delight, they responded with enthusiasm.
The following morning, armed with stationery, books, charts, and teaching materials, Vikas arrived at the footpath and commenced teaching the children in an open-air classroom beneath the vast sky. Little did he know that his passion for teaching would be reciprocated by the children, who began attending in increasing numbers.
Thanks to the power of social media and networking, the initiative rapidly expanded. Today, a dedicated team of 12 volunteers conducts morning and evening classes for over 40 children. The open-air sessions have since transitioned to a small hut, thoughtfully partitioned into three sections and equipped with fans, lights, and coolers. The endeavour has received support from friends and fellow Gurgaonites, who contribute through donations, facilities, footwear, sports equipment, and art supplies, and occasionally provide nourishing meals from their own homes.
When asked about the ultimate goal of the initiative, Vikas explains, “We aspire to uplift these children and enable them to access education by helping them enroll in nearby mainstream government schools or NGOs catering to underprivileged kids. Moreover, we aim to replicate our ‘Nukkad Pathshala’ model in multiple locations, as there are countless more children throughout the city who lack educational opportunities.”
Next time you find yourself near the junction connecting Supermart 1 and Golf Course Road, take a moment to visit and greet the dedicated teachers and students of Nukkad Pathshala. If you are interested in supporting this noble cause through volunteering, teaching supplies, or donations, please send a WhatsApp message to Vikas at +91-9953088899.
