What is common between Cristiano Ronaldo, Hardik Pandya, Kareena Kapoor & Varun Dhawan? They all swear by Pilates. So, when I came to know about a resident Pilates expert, I knew I must chat with her about this exercise.
Dr. Renu Joshi (T7-501) is a Physiotherapist and a certified Pilates Instructor from Norway. She has been imparting Pilates training for five years. She is a mother of two daughters and has moved to Boulevard recently.
Dr. Joshi studied Pilates as part of her physiotherapy curriculum. In Europe, she saw Europeans incorporating Pilates in their fitness programs. The difference in muscle strength and body posture was evident.
Dr. Joshi then undertook a Pilates certification. Becoming a regular practitioner, she could experience the difference in her second pregnancy compared to the first one. She says, “Pilates promotes strength, balanced muscle development, flexibility, and overall physical fitness by fostering mind and body connection.”
During COVID, Dr. Joshi began conducting online Pilates classes. She got students from across the globe. Now, she conducts in-person, group sessions. “It is a moderate to low impact workout that is effective, safe & suitable for all age groups & fitness levels.”
What do her students think about her sessions? “Just after one session, they feel energised & also taller as the spine opens with Pilates. Many have recovered from their day-to-day pain after a few sessions.”
Moving to a non – Pilates topic, I asked Dr. Joshi about her other passions. “I love badminton & dance.” She is also enthusiastic about holistic health including nutritious food habits. Clearly, we have a super fitness enthusiast amongst us!
Lastly, Dr. Joshi advises Pilates newbies, “Approach Pilates as a full body & mind activity and not just as an exercise form. Three sessions a week, 45 minutes a session is optimal! Oh & please use a Pilates Mat to avoid injury.”
