To take a much-needed step towards sustainable living, Retreat moved to waste segregation on January 22.
We had a lot of anticipation, how smooth or difficult the shift will be, how everyone will respond to the changes right from residents to the staff.
To our surprise, the shift was pretty swift and the response was really good! Within a few months, the residents learnt to segregate properly. The housekeeping staff learnt the entire waste collection procedure.
The in-house composting pits made the rest of the process easier.
Today, after a little over a year, we witness the benefits of this movement. Right from the house helps to the kids of the families everyone now knows how to segregate the waste at home. As a result, we receive completely segregated waste.
Every day around 250 kg of wet waste is being generated and being processed. 1000kg or more compost is being processed every month. This is being used for the upkeep of the horticulture of the society. This sure is a huge success for our society!
