It isn’t a secret that those residing in Wish Town, specifically in sectors 128 & 131, were for the longest time cursing speed-breakers. Their vehicles would jolt every hundred metres or so.
Then, suddenly, prayers were answered & most of the humps were purged for good.
This would have made a good ending, but there was a twist in the tale. Slowly, barriers were introduced. They have been placed around the exact locations where the speed-breakers once were. I understand their need because we have some idiots flying their bikes and cars, deafening us on the move and becoming a safety threat, especially to those on foot and stray animals.
What I am trying to say is simple. The barriers might be necessary, but their placement is an issue. The following six points help clear the air –
- The gap between the barrier layers is too small. Cars and bikes are okay as they can manoeuvre around them, but school buses and trucks struggle.
- Because there are barely any footpaths, pedestrians must steer through the same zig-zag path vehicles take. This could lead to accidents.
- The barriers are not heavy enough to withstand a stormy weather. They topple easily. That could cause property damage.
- Most of the barriers do not have reflective films. So, in the event of a blackout at night, they become hard to spot.
- Some barriers have been placed just before the entry gates of a few towers. If there is a queue, which I have spotted on multiple occasions, the whole road gets blocked.
- Slowing down and accelerating again hampers fuel economy. Plus, over the same distance, the vehicle emits more harmful emissions.
There are better ways to curb speeding and make our township safer. E.g., we could contribute and install an array of speed cameras. Those in violation will be penalised; the accumulated funds can help better our surroundings.
