It was past midnight. The residents of the tower stood aghast to the loud sound from one of the flats but didn’t dare to approach the flat residents to enquire the reason for the violence or mediate to pacify the quarrelling couple.
The security personnel were informed but they were also helpless as were not experienced to handle such situation.
The violence in the flat continued for almost an hour and then there was abnormal silence.
Whatsapp chats the next morning among the group members were about the incidents and or how to act in such situation.
In the present lifestyle such incidents are now common and increasing at alarming rate. We often learn about such incidents and at times it results in unfortunate development – to the extent of murder or suicide.
Now the social structure of the society has changed. In metropolitan cities where both the spouses are working professionals, have their own professional commitments and as a consequence the stress related with the professional obligation on them. In the initial period after marriage, the expectations from each other are also more and when not met with create a psychological pressure among them and culminates into the domestic violence.
Earlier Indian neighborhoods were like close knit families. Also we had joint families, such domestic violence was rare and if happened were resolved amicably by the elders of the house. But now-a-days, with the concept of nucleus families being common with husband wife and children, the differences among spouses are not addressed and culminate in such domestic violence.
People now-a-days may have close colleagues at office, a lot of virtual friends on digital platforms but seldom have close neighbours.
In order to prevent the unpleasant domestic violence, the society members need to come closer by increasing personal contacts among them by arranging occasional tea gathering of the floor residents on weekdays having outing among themselves.
