Shark Tank India has been the talk of the town for a year now, with many people watching the show. In case you’ve not watched it, it’s a show where budding entrepreneurs pitch their business to a few famous entrepreneurs – turned – investors in India to receive funding and guidance.
Due to its increasing popularity, it has become an achievement for a business to have an opportunity to present its pitch there. Simmi Nanda (T6, 001) had the opportunity to go and present her business to the Sharks with her two sons.
Simmi has opened a business named BeUnic. They have tried to build a platform where the LGBTQ+ community can feel safe. They believe that people should not discriminate. More than a brand, the family intends to build a self-help community where they can raise awareness and give guidance to those who need it.
When Simmi found out about her son’s identity, she was unable to accept that fact for a long time. She doesn’t want any other family to get broken due to these reasons.
While BeUnic did get a deal, they did not find it in line with their vision. The interested investor, Peyush Bansal, the owner of Lenskart, wanted them to become a D2C brand. So, Simmi rejected the deal, but she mentions how amazing the experience was, whether it be the Delhi auditions or the mail they got telling them that they had the chance to appear on Shark Tank.
BeUnic may not have accepted the funding, but it received exposure from the episode increasing the interactions on their website.
Simmi says, “For a business to grow, it needs to have a mentor. Also, I believe in destiny and the hard work one needs to do to reach this destiny. One can only become a successful entrepreneur if they can face danger head-on and be passionate and dedicated to their work.”
