Isolation or a deep sense of loneliness is a common complaint of the elderly. Changing lifestyles, demanding jobs and distractions like television and gadgets do not let this feeling of isolation affect the young college-going generation or the working class. But the void of community living is felt immensely by the elderly who have either shifted to these newly built societies or have retired from work.
Indian society is undergoing tremendous change, especially in terms of lives of the elderly people. What we call the elderly – are above sixty, retired but fit and fine people. They are not employed since above sixty age is not welcomed anywhere other than politics.
Post-independence era the population of India has been growing steadily on account of longer life expectancy and the healthy lifestyle of this generation.
This generation has worked hard to make India the type of power it is now and has lived a lifestyle away from the joint family traditions which were suited to cater to the old age pangs and issues. In the joint family system, the elders were a useful part of the family and were the father figures to a whole lot of people.
The breakup of this system has placed this category of people in a spot which is isolated and confined to the four walls of the house. The family of the elderly shrinks to just husband and wife – with their children living in faraway places. The lifestyle of the present young generation does not allow them to live along with their parents on some issues.
These elders are financially self-sufficient, have a house of their own, are medically fit and expected to live in the company of their spouses with practically nothing concrete to do.
This category of highly capable experienced and financially stable people would like to stay, share their lives, live with like-minded/similarly aged people and make their golden years glow instead of having gloomy existence, reading newspapers, browsing the net etc.
Keeping this in mind, a club for senior citizens has been formed. It is named “Apex Senior Citizens Club”. The objective of this group is to provide social activities along with cultural and healthy opportunities to senior citizens. The club also aims at taking up initiatives to discuss effective measures for the security and welfare of its members. With their rich experience, the members also wish to provide voluntary assistance in the development and welfare of the colony in general.
The club has started organizing a monthly get-together – the first one being held in January 2023. Birthdays of the members and their spouses along with anniversaries will also be celebrated. Birthdays of RKS Chauhan and Rajkumar Sagar which fall in January were celebrated in Club-26 where a sumptuous dinner was organized. Interested senior residents of Apex Athena may join the Senior Citizen club by contacting Sudhir Puri (B-202 Ph. 9810140024), Sunil Mathur (C-1902 Ph.9911892806) and R.L.Rambal( F-1701 ph.9811701249)
